The same principle is used here on the overseas market that we specialise in at UKSS. We have developed a huge database of contacts right around the world in over 70 countries and we are already trading with over a half of those! You will need to remember that many countries still have no Health Certificate in place, but we are working on that! As much as I have enjoyed building up these links and personal friendships, I am particularly keen on now bringing our overseas partners to the UK to see for themselves the massive advances that have been made here, especially since the late 80’s and the disaster to the industry caused by BSE. Thank goodness that period is now over and we can, once again, be proud to be on the world stage. The latest visitors that we brought to the UK to visit herds and select bulls were from Mexico, looking for (and finding) Charolais bulls and from Brazil, selecting Angus, Hereford, Devon and dairy bulls to add to their already established portfolio from UK Sires. The trade for Charolais in Mexico has been hard won and the Mexican Charolais Society trust us to find exactly what they are looking for to meet their exacting demands. They have selected 8 bulls, some of which have semen already collected and some as yet to come to stud. The Brazilians, from Araucaria, one of the largest AI companies in Brazil, were blown away with the superb quality of the cattle in the UK and we are in negotiation on large volume orders for 6 different bulls. Next up are a group of 21 Australian dairy farmers who are coming to the UK on tour with our partners AgriGene. We have put together a tour of beef and dairy farms for them from Scotland to the far west of Cornwall. After that our spring and summer diary is full with commitments to the Devon Cattle Society for their “At Home” tour, the Hereford European Congress Tour and the World Shorthorn Congress Tour. We also have programmes lined up for smaller groups from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand and the USA! Without your support and cooperation as breeders and without your great skills and experience in developing such balanced genetics to produce superb stock we could not make this charge back into the world market.
