We are able to assist in finding markets for semen both at home through the many semen retailers in the UK and abroad through our experience of the export market.

Through our membership of BLG we are also able to encourage our customers to visit overseas clients and apply for government assistance in travel or in bringing potential clients to the UK.

UK Sire Services is here to get the very best from your herd and adding value to your bottom line. We view the relationship between the bull owner or agent and ourselves as a partnership and as such we are keen to develop the lines of communication wherever possible.

Dairy bulls will usually begin to produce semen satisfactorily at 12 to 15 months of age and beef bulls a little later. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that a bull with a proven record of natural service will be suitable for AI. However, those with a successful natural service record usually adapt well to semen collection on stud, whilst young or inexperienced bulls benefit from the competent handling available.

We are only able to accept bulls free of IBR at the centre, we can arrange a blood test to be carried out for this purpose. In addition to this only bulls from EBL attested herds are generally accepted. However, if your herd is not EBL attested, please call us as it may be possible to make special arrangements.

Getting Semen Collected From Your Bull - A Step By Step Guide (Part 1)
1.
Choose your bull carefully and be sure you know your market for semen before you decide.
2.
The export market often has different requirements in type and traits to British requirements.
3.
Contact UKSS and book in your bull. If the bull is to come to stud we will ask you to get your vet to test the bull for IBR in two separate ways. A negative result from these tests is a part of our requirement before going to the next stage.
4.
If the bull does show a negative IBR result for both of these tests, send the confirmation by fax or post to the stud and ask for the official Ministry Application Forms to be sent. (The Ministry means Defra in England and either the Scottish or Welsh offices in those areas)
5.
Fill out the forms and send back to UKSS complete with the cheque for Defra as per requirement and a copy of the pedigree or registration certificate.
6.
Complete and return the Contract for semen collection which will include a list of countries that you want semen qualified for. (Feel free to ask advice)
7.
If, by owner’s choice or failure of the IBR test, the bull is to be collected on farm, semen will not be eligible for export outside Great Britain.
8.
You will be contacted within 2 weeks by your local Ministry Vet to make an appointment to start the tests whilst the bull is in isolation on farm. This is when the term of isolation begins.
9.
Once your bull has passed all the tests, both you and UKSS will be notified by the relevant Ministry. UKSS will contact you on that day to ensure that you are then able to arrange transport before the 30 day isolation period expires. The bull has to travel in isolation so as to maintain his status.
10.
On arrival at UK Sire Services the vehicle will be disinfected at the entrance and guided to the Quarantine Unit for unloading into an individual box. (Bulls must not even share the same air space during this 30 day isolation period.)
11.
No bull will be allowed onto the stud until the staff are satisfied that all paperwork and passports are in order. We reserve the right to turn bulls away without unloading if we feel that the bio-security of the stud is under threat or if some of our written requirements are not fulfilled. (For example, every bull arriving at the stud must be halter trained and have been ringed)
