Semen is collected from both beef and dairy bulls on farm and on stud. UKSS has so far collected semen from over 600 bulls representing 36 different breeds in less than two years. Many bulls are of great interest to the export market.
It is essential that breeders considering collecting semen from their bulls provide as much information as possible so as to aid marketing both in the UK and overseas. We actively encourage beef breeders to record and to be sure that they take weights and measurements of each young bull destined for the stud at crucial times, especially at weaning and yearling stages.
Dairy sires come to UK Sire Services for semen collection as proven sires or young bulls in a progeny testing scheme. As their daughters come into milk and are classified and recorded the option is open to bring them back for further collection and marketing as proven sires. We work with the major AI companies like Alta Genetics, Avoncroft Sires, GB Bulls and Sterling Sires together with the many independent suppliers. We work in conjunction with Breed Societies such as the Ayrshire, Dairy Shorthorn, Guernsey and Jersey Island Genetics to this end.
